Description
A row of cottages located in Shelf, primarily formed from a late 17th-century house. The cottages are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, incorporating a hip to the return which serves numbers 6 and 7. The row comprises numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Cock Hill. The main front, representing numbers 3, 4, and 5, originally presented as a three-bay house, though the original windows of number 5 have been lost, and the doorways are all 19th century with monolithic jambs. Number 3 features a double-chamfered mullioned window of three lights, with one mullion removed and repositioned centrally. Number 4 has a double-chamfered mullioned and transomed window of twelve lights, with a four-light window above. Number 6 displays a double-chamfered mullioned window of five lights, with a three-light window above. Quoins are present on the corner. The right-hand return wall facing the lane retains a chamfered mullioned window of two lights to the first floor. There are four stacks along the ridge. Number 7 was added in the early 19th century, designed to blend with the hipped roof of number 6. Number 7 has altered windows and a doorway with monolithic jambs. The original plan of the 17th-century structure is obscured by later development and alterations, but it appears to have been a three-roomed house with a hall at the left-hand end.
