Description
The lodge and attached gate piers to Norwood were built in 1855 and are designed in a picturesque style. Constructed from hammer-dressed stone and ashlar, the lodge features a slate roof. It has an 'L' shape, with one wing that includes a large bay window, where the corners are cut back to form quadrants of three lights. This bay window flanks a central window that has similar moulded jambs and a transom. The wing facing the road, along with the porch at the angle, showcases steep and heavy gables topped with spike dropped finials and elaborately decorated barge boards. The porch is supported by two wooden columns of different designs, which hold a lintel inscribed with raised and gilded Gothic lettering that reads: 'COELI CERTA MERCES. AD 1855', suggesting that the reward of Heaven is certain. The stone ridged roof is adorned with slates arranged in fish scale and lozenge patterns, and features a prominent central stack. The attached gate piers are square in section, with sunk panels, a cornice, and a pyramidal finial that has a decorative chased surface. Short sections of the adjoining wall include an ornamental pierced balustrade that reflects an Elizabethan character.
