Description
Low Bentley Farmhouse is a house dated 1600, featuring a hall and cross-wing with an added rear kitchen wing. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The double gabled frontage was completely rebuilt in the 1970s, although it retains some original details. The cross-wing is flush with the hall, and both sections have double chamfered mullioned windows. The cross-wing includes a 10-light mullioned and transomed window, with a similar window above it. The hall boasts a large 14-light window with a 3-light window above; all windows have hoodmoulds with straight returns. The gables are coped with kneelers and finials, and there is a lateral stack for the hall.
On the right-hand return wall, there is a side entrance featuring moulded composite jambs and one original stop with a 4-centred arched lintel that has carved spandrels bearing the initials 'WC' and 'JC'. The date is inscribed at the top of the lintel. A string course runs over and around the kitchen wing, which has double chamfered mullioned windows of 2 lights. The gable has quoins and a double chamfered mullioned window of 6 lights with a king mullion, along with a 10-light mullioned and transomed window above.
Inside, the open hall features an original gallery with panelling carved with lunettes. The staircase retains its original balusters, and some original arch-headed doors remain, as do board and muntin partitions in the right-hand cross-wing.
