Description
Northowram Hall is a country house, dating back to approximately 1700, with significant remodelling and additions in the 1860s and 1890s. It is constructed of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings, and features hipped and gabled slate roofs with coped ridge stacks. The building has a plinth, lintel, and sill band, along with angle pilasters, eaves cornices, and a blocking course with finials. The main structure is arranged in an L-shape and has two storeys and six by eight windows. Most windows are wooden cross casements, with leaded glazing and moulded ashlar surrounds. The front entrance is highlighted by a central portico with rusticated columns and a crested parapet, covering a round-arched doorway with a fanlight. Flanking the doorway are round-arched windows, and above these is a cartouche flanked by single windows. Canted bay windows, two storeys high with three lights, are also present. Attached to the hall is a conservatory, which spans nine bays. The conservatory has a stepped ashlar plinth, a wooden frame with elliptical arched lights and toplights, and a hipped clerestory roof. A central glazed double door is topped by a glazed pediment. The interior of the hall includes an entrance hall with a stone cross-mullioned glazed screen, and a Tudor arched wooden arcade leading to a splay-footed open-well staircase and landing with twist balusters. The landing incorporates sham timber framing. One room features a panelled dado and sham timber framing, while another has an open-plan layout with an ashlar and brick Renaissance Revival-style fireplace, complete with turned and panelled balusters and strapwork overmantel. A ground floor room to the left contains an oval, panelled ceiling with a foliage frieze and enriched cornice, along with a late 19th-century wooden fireplace, panelled overmantel, and glazed bookcases. A corresponding room to the right has a timber-framed recess enclosing a door and a Tudor arched ashlar fireplace with a Renaissance Revival overmantel. Other features include a wooden lean-to glasshouse and a polygonal sun room. A glazed corridor leads from the main block to the conservatory.
