Description
The slab wall located to the north of the footpath between Upper Lane and Hall Lane in Halifax dates from around 1780 and has sustained minor damage over the years. It is constructed from ashlar stone slabs that are linked by cast iron plates and bolts. The wall consists of 224 large plain stone slabs, standing 1 metre high, and stretches 174 metres along the north side of the footpath. This type of wall or fence was once common in the area. In 1793, Robert Brown and his team noted similar "fences" made from long flagstones, which were set upright in the ground, creating a complete and attractive boundary. This slab wall is the only example that remains intact today.
