Description

The Shoulder of Mutton Public House, which includes the former Priestley Hall, is a late 17th-century building that has been altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed stone, with some parts rendered, and features ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs. The building is two stories high and has quoins.

The south front has a gabled cross wing on the left, which contains five-light chamfered mullion windows on both floors, each with continuous drip moulds. To the right, there is a single doorway followed by another five-light mullion window, with an additional five-light mullion window above. Further to the right, set back, is the former Priestley Hall, which has first and second floor bands, a plain parapet, and a slightly projecting central section. The central doorway has a plain ashlar surround and is flanked by single five-light mullion windows. Above this doorway is a central two-light mullion window, also flanked by five-light mullion windows. The gable wall facing the street is painted render.

On the rear facade, to the right, there is an early cross wing with a four-light chamfered mullion window on the first floor. The former Priestley Hall features a central tall staircase window, flanked by five-light windows on both floors.
