Description

Hargreaves Head is a house that features a door lintel dated 'SBM1693', although the main structure was rebuilt around 1740 with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a seven-bay facade, with bays two to four projecting forward in a symmetrical arrangement beneath a gable. This gable is accentuated by rusticated quoins, a band, a cornice, and a pediment.

The central doorway is framed with an architrave and a pulvinated frieze, above which is a sash window also framed with an architrave. Flanking the doorway are slender sash windows with projecting sides, each having a similar window above. The first bay features a large 19th-century two-light sash window with a matching window above and a coped gable. The third bay has a 17th-century door lintel with altered jambs that have been converted into a window, along with a wide string course above the ground floor windows and a two-light sash window with a similar window above. The fourth bay includes a single-storey gabled extension from the early 20th century, which is contemporary with an internal staircase, featuring a two-light sash window and a single sash window on the first floor of the main range, topped with a coped gable and a stack. There are two additional stacks on the ridge at the junctions of the first and second bays, and the second and third bays. The left-hand gable shows traces of a mullioned window on the first floor. The rear kitchen wing has a four-light mullioned window with added lights above, and a later 19th-century two-storey wing has been built onto the rear of the first bay.

Inside, the main rooms at the front are well-appointed with good panelling. The first bay features bolection moulded panels, while the second bay has raised and fielded panels along with a finely moulded fireplace that has a pulvinated lintel. The first-floor room in the second bay is also panelled.
