Description
27 and 29 Brookfoot Lane are two houses that were originally a house and a school, built in 1787. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and feature a stone slate roof. The symmetrical south front is two stories high and consists of three bays, with rusticated quoins, a plinth, and a broad band. The central bay has paired doorways that share a common central monolithic jamb. On either side of the central bay are large two-light broad sash windows with projecting sills, and the lintels are formed from the band above.
In the central bay, there is a large recess the size of a single light window, which contains a tablet with the following inscription:
'The leer of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it. This School and House, was Built at the charitable Benevolence of Mr: William Staines, of LONDON. Anno Domini 1787.'
At the rear, there is a single-storey outshot with a cat slide roof, featuring flush quoins and a flat-faced mullioned window with three lights in the roof space, along with a two-light broad sash window below and a doorway with monolithic jambs. There are two gable stacks at the ridge, and gutter brackets are present only on the front.
