Description

Lower Moss Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations from the 18th century, and an attached barn added in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. It features a three-room hall-and-cross-wing plan, although the left end of the cross-wing is in ruins.

The main range faces north towards the road and has a doorway with a lugged architrave and triangular pediment. To the left of the doorway is a three-light chamfered mullioned window, with a four-light window above it on the first floor. To the right of the doorway, there are double chamfered mullioned windows with two lights (possibly a fire-window) and four lights, as well as an inserted doorway made from the remains of a four-light window with a king mullion, now altered to one light and three lights. The first floor has a blocked taking-in door and four square windows with chamfered surrounds.

Between the house and the barn are quoins, and the barn features a semi-circular arched cart entry with an impost block and an owl hole above. At the junction of the house and barn is a mistal doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround. The south front has quoins and a segmental-arched cart entry with a stop chamfered surround, which may date from the 17th century and be reused.

The gabled porch has paired doorways and long kneelers to the left of a double chamfered mullioned window that was originally four lights. There is also a six-light window with a king mullion and a two-light fire-window. Inside this room, there is a segmental-arched fireplace with a cyma moulded surround. The first floor contains chamfered mullioned windows with four lights and three with two lights, although many lack some or all of their mullions. The building has a single stack at the ridge.
