Description
Carlton United Reformed Church is located on a corner site with Harrison Road and was built in 1837 as a Congregational Chapel. It features a simple classical design and is two storeys high, constructed of stone "brick" with ashlar dressings. Due to the slope of the site, the front of the building is raised on a basement plinth, accessed by a broad flight of steps. The church has sill bands and a shallow moulded eaves cornice beneath a hipped slate roof.
Prominently above the centre of the entrance front, the ashlar chimney stack is designed to resemble a crest, adorned with an anthemion panel and flanked by volutes, as well as anthemion austeria at the bases of three pots. The stack itself includes a date plaque. The first floor has four bays featuring round-headed windows, while the ground floor has plain outer windows and a central Venetian window with keystones, surrounded by a panelled architrave with roundel corner blocks and stained glass roundels depicting lambs. This central window is flanked by doorways that also have panelled architrave surrounds with corner blocks and thin projecting cornices above.
The return elevation facing Harrison Road consists of five bays, with round-headed windows on the first floor and plain lintels on the ground floor, along with sill bands and an eaves cornice that is returned.
