Description

Halifax Police Station is a police station built in 1889, designed in the Early Renaissance style. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features slate ridge roofs. It is 2 and a half storeys high, with square-headed sash windows on the ground floor that have projecting moulded hoods. The first-floor windows are semi-circular headed sashes set within flat-topped openings, and there is a stone parapet above, which is crowned with ball finials.

The main facade faces Blackwall and consists of 11 bays, with double bays at each end and 9 central bays that project outward. There are two, two-storey splayed bay windows decorated with pilasters, each topped with recessed gables that contain circular windows. The central square projection features a round-headed doorway with a moulded hood that supports a carved Royal coat of arms. Above this, there are three light transom and mullion windows, and the attic has two small sashes under a semi-circular gable. Above and behind the tower, which is decorated with pilasters and twin arched openings, is an octagonal cupola with a stone roof.

The Harrison Street facade has 20 bays with similar window styles, featuring double bays that project at either end, along with two smaller projecting bays, one of which contains the entrance. Both of these are topped with attic windows in gables. A buttress at the north end has a foundation plaque set into the wall. The Carlton Street facade has three bays with a projecting central porch that features a semi-circular arched opening, along with small attic windows in a semi-circular gable.
