Description

This is a threshing barn located in Old Bull Yard, 25 metres northeast of No 28 Towngate. It dates from the early 16th century and was clad in stone in the mid-18th century. The barn features oak timber-framing and thinly coursed hammer-dressed stone, topped with a stone slate roof. It has three bays and a single aisle to the south.

The south entrance front includes a central cart entrance with double plank doors, although the 18th-century flanking stone walls have collapsed. The blank stone gable walls are present to the north and south. The rear north wall originally had a central cart entrance, which has since been blocked. To the right, there is a doorway and a window, both with flush ashlar surrounds, that are now also blocked.

Inside, the north wall features a wall plate and three posts with braces to the tie beam. Truss A is partially built into the west gable wall and includes posts, braces, a mid rail, and a brick lower wall, along with a tie beam and king post. Trusses B and C have slightly curved principal rafters and tall king posts that are straight braced to a square set ridge beam. There are single trenched butt purlins for each roof pitch, and the rafters are in one piece, scarfed to the arcade plate, with secondary rafters to the south aisle wall plate. The hay loft occupies the third bay. This barn is an important and rare survival of a late medieval timber-framed structure.
