Description
The Church of St James was built between 1876 and 1878 and features elements inspired by 13th-century and Early English styles. Constructed from sandstone with ashlar dressings, it has a tall square side tower with plain set-back buttresses and belfry openings, topped by a distinctive broach spire. The west façade showcases a large geometrical window, while the aisles are adorned with paired lancet windows. The clerestory includes circular windows, which are also found in the low transepts. The architects of this church were Andrews and Pepper, and the foundation stone was laid in 1876. The tower significantly enhances the town's skyline.
