Description
Bolton House is a former modest country house built around 1800-1830, likely a rebuild of an earlier manor house, situated overlooking Peel Park, which was developed from its grounds. The building is two storeys tall and constructed of sandstone ashlar, featuring symmetrical five-bay elevations on the north and south sides, with a lower service wing to the east. It has a plinth, a sill band, a moulded cornice, and a parapet, topped with a stone slate roof and flanked by corniced chimneys.
On the entrance front, the outer bays project slightly from the main building line, creating a recessed quoin pilaster effect. The windows in these bays are surrounded by eared shallow moulded architraves. The entrance is framed by paired pilasters and an entablature, which is likely an addition from around 1840-1850. The service wing features a hipped stone slate roof and has five windows on both its frontages, with the sashes retaining their glazing bars. The west end of the main house includes a two-storey ashlar bow with one window, and the flanking windows have similar architrave surrounds as those on the entrance front. The plain five-bay front facing Peel Park has taller ground floor windows that rise from the plinth.
