Description

54 Little Horton Lane is a Grade II* listed villa, built around 1850-1860, showcasing a sophisticated asymmetrical design. The building is two storeys high and constructed from finely dressed sandstone, featuring a three-bay front that is slightly set back on a low terrace. It has a hipped stone slate roof with flat eaves supported by elongated modillion brackets and corniced chimneys. The villa has a plinth and a first-floor plat band.

The recessed section of the front includes two broad first-floor sash windows with horizontal glazing bars set in shallow reveals, and a tripartite ground floor window with risers to the sill. The break in the façade has three narrow first-floor windows and a plain canted bay window on the ground floor. A recessed entrance next to the break features a panelled door.

Attached to the south side of the villa is a large single-storey wing, likely built as a ballroom. This wing slightly projects from the main house and features a large Venetian window at its center, with an arch that integrates into a deep entablature below a full-width bracketed pediment. Inside, the ballroom boasts a spacious, lofty room with a ribbed and compartmented barrel vaulted ceiling, decorated with husk and rinceaux garlands. On the south side, the vault is pierced by two round-headed windows with a concentric glazing pattern. The ribs of the vault spring from a deeply moulded cornice, supported by large consoles around all four walls. The west wall features bold pilaster swags and ribbons, while the north wall has a heavy carved wood chimney piece with a mirror over-mantel and a scrolled open pediment. Surrounding the house and ballroom is a low terrace, enclosed by a cast iron interlinked circle railing with stone dies capped by cornices.
