Description

The George and Dragon Inn is a 16th-century, two-storey building featuring a gabled front and mullioned windows, with 19th-century glazing and an early 19th-century porch added. To the left, there is a two-storey wing that was added in 1704, although it has been significantly altered in the 19th century. One wall of this wing contains a stone inscription that reads, "S. H. M. Idem Tamen Sam. Hem. filius sumptibus fuis erigi fecit 1704." Inside, there is an iron-studded oak door on a pivot, an oak centre tree, and timber framing. The lintel of the fireplace in the upper room has a Latin inscription that states, "Not for the purpose of making a show but for necessary uses Samuel Hemingway and Mary his wife enlarged this house AD 1704. These things are cherishing; victuals drink, warmth, shelter, which if thow possess, remember gratefully to give thanks to God." The 19th-century alterations include a narrow two-storey canted bay with a stepped stone roof and an applied finial. To the right, across the yard and linked by a covered way, is a stable and coach house block from around 1800 or the early 19th century, positioned at right angles to the road. This structure is built of coursed sandstone "bricks" and features a gable and stone slate roof, with an archway and flanking square openings at the first-floor level.
