Description
The Tower of Woodhouse Grove School is a tower or folly built around 1799. It is constructed of red brick faced ashlar with ashlar dressings and has a square plan, rising to two storeys. Designed in the Gothic style, the tower is raised on a basement plinth and is accessed by five steps with iron railings. Each face of the tower features a large pointed arched opening, and above this, there is a single 4-centred arched window opening on each side, which is fitted with an iron railing and has a hood mould with blank shields on either side. The structure is topped with an ashlar band and battlements. This tower was commissioned by Robert Elam to provide employment for local men who were out of work.
