Description

This is a country house, now used as a school. The core of the building dates to the mid-18th century and was significantly enlarged around 1790. It was converted into a school in 1811, with further additions in 1848 and 1854, designed by Thomas Shaw of Leeds. The building is constructed of dressed stone and ashlar, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. It has an H-plan layout.

The south front is characterized by an eleven-window central section, with slightly recessed three-window sections flanking it, and a central doorway. A later two-columned porch provides access to the building, featuring a six-panel door flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Above the door are three smaller, similar sashes. Single window projections are located on either side of the central section, with sashes in pedimented surrounds on the ground floor and smaller sashes above. The wing sections on either side, dating from 1848, feature ground floor sashes in moulded surrounds, with smaller sashes above. The taller projecting wings to the left (1848) and right (1854) each have three tall, round-headed windows in moulded surrounds with an impost band, above three smaller windows in moulded surrounds with a cill band. They have dentilated eaves and shallow hipped roofs.

The east and west return fronts have six windows with similar fenestration. The rear section, dating to the mid-18th century, has three windows, a plinth, raised quoins, an eaves band, a stone slate roof, and a tall central stack. The west entrance front has a central doorway with a plain ashlar surround and a glazed four-panel door. On either side are single Venetian windows with plain ashlar surrounds; above, a central sash is flanked by single Venetian windows, all with plain surrounds. The rear east front includes sashes and a central Venetian stair window.

The interior of the mid-18th century rear block retains many original features, including doorcases and doors. The two main reception rooms have plaster coving, partial dado panelling, and paneled window surrounds; the south room contains a high-quality original fireplace. A single-flight return staircase features three turned balusters per tread and a moulded handrail. The mid-19th century school block includes the dining hall, entrance hall, and corridor. The property, a small country house and estate, was purchased in 1811 by the Methodist Conference to establish a boarding school for the sons of itinerant preachers.
