Description

The Towlson Memorial Music Room, School Shop, and Domestic Offices at Woodhouse Grove School is a former barn and coach house with stables, dating from the mid-18th century. It was converted in 1811, altered around 1900, and had a clock tower added in 1902, with further alterations made in 1964. The building is constructed of coursed stone with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs, featuring quoins.

The music room and shop, originally a barn converted to a schoolroom in 1811, has a west gable wall with a blocked former central doorway flanked by single round-headed breathers. Above this, there are two tall round-headed windows, with a plaque inscribed "WESLYAN ACADEMY OPENED JANUARY 8 : 1812" positioned between them, along with a clock face. There is also a plaque commemorating the addition of the turret clock in 1902. Above the gable, a square clock tower features corner pilasters, bracketed eaves, and a pyramidal roof topped with a weather vane.

The south front has two rows of breathers and five tall round-headed windows, with the rightmost window now serving as a door. The north front includes a blocked threshing doorway on the left, three round-headed windows, a four-panel door, a six-panel door to the right, and a pair of glazing bar sashes, above which are two plain sashes.

The domestic offices, which were formerly the coach house and stables and served as a chapel from 1811 to 1833, have a five-window facade. The central section, which slightly projects, has three windows and is topped by a pediment. The central doorway has been converted into a window, featuring a segmental pediment supported on brackets, with tall glazing bar windows on either side. There are three blocked square windows above, and a single inserted window that breaks into the pediment. On either side, there are single round-headed coach entrances, with the left entrance masked by a lean-to addition and the right containing a pair of inserted casements with a doorway to the left. Above are single square windows, with the left window blocked.
