Description
Field House is a circa 1840 rebuild of a 1776 canal toll house, situated at a right angle to Apperley Road and backing onto the canal towpath. The building is two storeys high with a basement, and incorporates remnants of the original structure as an outhouse to the south. It is constructed of coursed sandstone "bricks." The front facing the garden has two windows, with revealed 19th-century sash windows and a plain doorway featuring a rectangular fanlight with marginal glazing. The gable end is covered with stone slate and has flanking chimneys, with small consoles to the eaves. The original building section retains a two-light square mullion window.
