Description
Midgley Farmhouse and Nos 1 and 3 Midgley Farm Cottages are a house and two cottages, now three dwellings, dating from the late 17th century with mid-18th century additions at both ends. The buildings are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof and are two storeys high, featuring a single-storey outshut to the rear of the house, which has a two-cell direct entry plan.
The first floor has six windows in total. On the left side, the former dairy, which was added to the house, has a doorway with a sill-tie next to a 3-light flat-faced mullioned window, with a blocked taking-in-door nearby. The house itself features quoins and double-chamfered mullioned windows, although some mullions are missing. The windows include four lights with a three-light window above, five lights with a four-light window above, and an added porch with a weathered plinth. The original studded oak plank door and an inner doorway have a stop-chamfered surround, along with a two-light window. Gable stacks are present.
No 3 has a doorway with monolithic jambs and a two-light flat-faced mullioned window, with a three-light window above it. No 1 features a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a two-light flat-faced mullioned window, with a three-light window above. Additionally, No 1 has a doorway with tie-stone jambs and two two-light windows on either side, along with two four-light windows above. The building has a coped gable with kneelers and a stack to the right, as well as another stack on the ridge.
Inside, the arcade-plate has a groove on its soffit, indicating the former presence of a timber division wall between the rear service rooms. The taking-in-door may suggest that textile manufacture was once practiced here.
