Description
The statue of Sir Titus Salt is located in the center of the main terrace of Roberts Park and was erected in 1903. It was created by F. Derwent Wood for Mr. J. Roberts, who was the director of Saltaire works from 1893. The statue features an ashlar base with bronze plaques and faces north.
The front plaque is inscribed with "SIR TITUS SALT" and commemorates the baronet's hundredth anniversary of his birth on September 20, 1803, and the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Saltaire Mills. The rear plaque states that the statue was erected on September 20, 1903, by Mr. James Roberts, J.P.
The sides of the statue have bas-reliefs depicting the angora goat and the alpaca goat. The base is decorated with a wreath. The statue itself is a fine representation of Salt, dressed in a Victorian frock-coat and holding a parchment, and it stands prominently with Saltaire, his creation, in the background.
