Description
16 Main Street is an early 19th-century building that was originally part of a pair, forming the end of a terrace that includes Nos 4 to 12, although it may date back slightly earlier. The building has two storeys and is constructed of coursed rubble. It features widely-spaced moulded gutter-brackets and a stone slab roof, with coping and kneelers at the left-hand exposed end. A central ridge chimney is present, along with a low relief stringcourse.
The original No 16 has one window, while the original No 14 has two windows. The upper right-hand window of No 14 is larger than the others, and the lower windows have been altered by the addition of a modern bow window. The older windows are eared sashes with glazing bars, all framed by stone slab surrounds. The left-hand doorways include one for No 14, which is blocked and lacks a doorcase, and one for No 16, which features a doorcase that matches the rest of the terrace, complete with jambs that have triple flutes and a simple segmental pediment.
This building is part of a group that includes Burley Lodge (No 2, Highway Cottage), Chevin House, Nos 4 to 16 (even), Nos 24 to 30 (even) and 30A, St Mary's Church, the wall around the ground south of the mill pond (along Main Street and the west side of Corn Mill Lane), and the Malt Shovel Hotel.
