Description
The Parish Church of St Mary, consecrated in 1843 after rebuilding, features a chancel that was enlarged and a gallery that was removed during alterations in 1870. This church is designed in the Gothic revival style of the late Georgian period and is constructed from coursed rubble. It has a wide nave without aisles, topped with a single roof span and an almost flat ceiling. Each side of the nave is adorned with six tall lancet windows that have dripmoulds.
The west tower is flanked by porches, each containing a lancet window and a similar doorway. The main west door is gabled, and there are lancet windows on each exposed side of the tower. The tower's smaller upper stage features miniature flying buttresses from the pinnacles of the lower stage, along with louvred lancets and additional pinnacles, culminating in an octagonal spire.
Inside, the chancel includes a three-light east window and short lancets on the north and south sides, with a steep-pitched arched wooden roof. The furnishings are simple, highlighted by an octagonal font made of inlaid marble. Most windows contain Victorian stained glass, and there is a wall memorial to William Maude, who died in 1588 and was dedicated in 1781.
The church is part of a group that includes Burley Lodge (No 2, Highway Cottage), Chevin House (Nos 4 to 16, even, and Nos 24 to 30, even, and 30A), No 2 Post Office Yard, St Mary's Church, and the wall surrounding the ground south of the mill pond along Main Street and the west side of Corn Hill Lane, as well as the Malt Shovel Hotel.
