Description

The Malt Shovel Hotel dates from 1880 and is a two-story detached building. Constructed of dressed coursed stone, it has a steep-pitched slate roof and is built in a mildly Gothic Revival style. The front portion features a bay with three sash windows on each side and two sash windows between. A parapet tops the façade, featuring a central gablet bearing carved emblems of appellation. A central two-bay arcaded porch is supported by painted columns reminiscent of the 13th century, with midway bands and foliage capitals; the porch is now glazed. To the left is a gable with an oriel window that slightly projects, and a three-light window to the right. Below these are an arched opening and a three-light window. The hotel forms a group with Burley Lodge (No 2, also known as Highway Cottage), Chevin House (Nos 4 to 16 even, Nos 24 to 30 even and 30A), 2 Post Office Yard, St Mary’s Church, the wall to the south of the mill pond (along Main Street and the west side of Corn Mill Lane), and the Malt Shovel Hotel itself.
