Description
The Ukrainian Community Memorial is located in the north corner of North Bierley Municipal Cemetery in Bradford. It commemorates the millennium of Christianity in Ukraine from 988 to 1988 and honors those who sacrificed their lives for God and their country.
This memorial is designed as a sandstone obelisk that tapers from a rectangular base to a triangular top, resting on a two-stepped base. The front face features a relief carving of a cross in the upper section, inspired by the Tryzub cross, with chamfered corners. Below the cross are two inscriptions, accompanied by an oval-shaped relief carving depicting arms and flags, with a gilded Tryzub in a shield, which is the coat of arms of Ukraine, encircled by an olive wreath.
The gilded inscriptions are in Ukrainian, followed by English translations. The upper inscription reads: 988 – 1988 / MILLENNIUM OF CHRISTIANITY / IN UKRAINE. The lower inscription states: IN MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR GOD AND THEIR COUNTRY. / ERECTED BY THE UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY IN BRADFORD.
The rear face of the memorial is plain, and the name of the masons, BAILEY & PEDDER, is inscribed on the upper step of the base.
