Description
Buttersaw First School is a single-storey school building dating from around 1850. It features six bays and a cross wing, constructed from sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressing, displaying slight Jacobean detail. The gable end has a slate roof with coping stones and octagonal shafted chimneys. There is a weathered plinth string and a sill band. The windows have chamfered stone mullions with splayed reveals and drip moulds, and the doorway is framed in a similar style. Above the windows in the gable end of the cross wing, there is a coat of arms belonging to the Ferrand family. The south gable end has stepped windows.
