Description
Bradford College, Bolton Royd, is a substantial villa built around 1850-1855, set back from the road within its grounds. It features debased Greek Revival detailing and stands two storeys tall with a five-bay front. The exterior is constructed of ashlar and includes sill bands, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The hipped slate roof is complemented by corniced chimneys. The front façade is flanked by full-height rectangular bay windows with pilasters, and the ground floor features a Doric entablature. The first floor has two-light windows with ashlar lintels that are decorated with an anthemion pattern. An elaborate wrought iron balcony sits above a porch supported by Greek Doric columns. There is also a later two-storey north wing that has a very steep mansard roof. Inside, the staircase is adorned with delicate cast iron bannisters featuring an anthemion pattern. This villa is an early example of the development of Manningham as a fashionable suburb.
