Description
Lane Head House was likely built around 1710 to 1720 as the steward's house for the Esholt Estate. This is a substantial house of three storeys, constructed from regularly coursed grit stone, with a symmetrical five-bay south front. The house was extended around 1800 and the west front was rebuilt in 1911. It appears to have originally been a two-storey building, later heightened during the 18th century. Chamfered quoins are visible on the ground and first floors, with quoin pilasters at the top floor. It has moulded sill courses and a deeply moulded eaves cornice supported by modillion brackets. The roof is covered with stone slate. Tall, cavetto-corniced chimneys are present. The windows on the ground and first floors are tall, with architrave surrounds. A central doorway of similar proportions, also with an architrave surround and cornice, is situated in the centre of the south front. The top floor has square windows within architraves, the central one featuring a scrolled head, a keystone, and a shallow apron extending down to the sill course. It features late 18th-century glazing bar sashes. The east return shows two original bays, with an extension dating from around 1800, with large square windows, the glazing of which has been altered. A modern ground floor extension exists, which has been modified during conversion to flats. The design of the south front is reminiscent of Esholt Hall itself, and it is possible that Joseph Pope of Farnley was involved in its design.
