Description

This listing describes a group of millworkers' housing located along Union Road, Vine Street, Falcon Street, Hart Street, and Lime Street, built around 1850 in connection with the rebuilding of Cannon Mill. The buildings form a sequence of short streets featuring stepped rows of single bay houses constructed from sandstone "brick" with stone slate roofs. The terminal units on Great Horton Road, numbered 516 to 532, include contemporary shops designed for the millworkers. Architectural details include ashlar lintels above sash windows and cornices on plain consoles at the doorways. The properties at 516 to 532 also feature hipped roofs and plain two-light pilaster-framed shop fronts. This complex is noted for its industrial significance and as an intact example of workers' housing associated with the mill.
