Description

Bolton Old Hall is a timber-framed hall house that was encased and largely rebuilt in coursed gritstone in 1627. The west wing underwent alterations in the early 18th century, with further modifications to the hall range and west front in the 19th century. It features stone slate roofs and 18th and 19th century corniced chimneys.

The south front of the hall range retains a chamfered mullioned-transomed window with five lights, which has small old leaded panes, and has 19th century semi-dormers above. The adjacent gabled elevation of the west wing has a similar mullioned-transomed ground floor window, which has been reglazed, and on the first floor, there are three early 18th century tall mullion and transom two-light windows, also with small leaded panes and capped by small cornices. In the gable, there is an elongated upright oval window with related leaded panes and a drip mould above.

The west front has been remodelled, and two of the five mullioned and transomed windows have been remullioned and reglazed. There is a doorway with a cornice hood. The north front features a large mullioned-transomed window that lights the staircase, and a doorway with a date panel inscribed "TW over Anno Doi above date 1627".

Inside, the hall has stop-chamfered ceiling beams, 17th and 18th century panelling in the west ground floor room, and a chamfered jamb fireplace with a massive, shaped lintel. The south-east ground floor room contains reset 17th century panelling with a fine patterned frieze and a reset fireplace dated 1682. There is a good late 18th century staircase with turned balusters. The first floor south-west corner bedroom has a chamfered jamb centred arched fireplace, and there is an exposed wall post at the head of the staircase. The king post roof trusses and studding of one original gable end are now contained in the roof space. The east wing is now separately owned and is referred to as Bolton Old Hall Cottage.
