Description
This is an L-plan block of a barn and former stables that forms the north-east corner of the yard at Ghyll Fold. The barn dates from the 17th century or possibly earlier and is constructed from large blocks of coursed gritstone with a stone slate roof and a recessed portal. Inside, it features a timber frame with double aisles and six bays supported by king post trusses. The stables, which are at right angles and form the east side of the yard, are made of coursed gritstone and sandstone "brick" with a stone slate roof, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. The gable end has shaped kneelers, and there is a two-light square mullioned window on the first floor and a three-light chamfered mullion window on the ground floor. The entrance has a plain squared jamb doorway, and there are external stone steps leading to the first-floor loft door, which features a cavetto moulded round-headed opening.
