Description
Whitteron House is an early 19th-century house associated with the Low Moor Ironworks, where Dr. Whitteron served as the official doctor. The house was altered in the mid-19th century and is set in its own grounds at a right angle to Carr Lane. It is two stories tall, constructed of sandstone that resembles brick, and features a stone slate roof with a modillion bracket eaves cornice. The chimneys are corniced and topped with pairs of octagonal pots.
The right side of the building shows signs of earlier construction, suggesting it may have originally been a cottage, with this part having served as a surgery. The facade includes four windows framed in ashlar, fitted with 19th-century sash windows. There are two doorways with plain surrounds; one has been altered to a window and features a cornice on consoles. The left side has a 1870s pilastered porch with iron cresting on the entablature. On the right side, the former surgery door is adorned with a rectangular marginal glazed fanlight in a diamond pattern. Inside, there is notable leaded painted Victorian glass in the vestibule and living room.
