Description
Holly Hall Cottage is a half-timbered hall house, originally built and then encased in stone during the 17th century, with a restoration taking place in the 1920s. The building is two storeys high, constructed from irregularly coursed gritstone with large quoins. It has a stone slate roof, a central gable featuring a saddlestone and kneelers, and a four-light chamfered mullion window. A doorway is marked with a scalloped lintel dated 1678, and a drip mould above. A gabled south wing, dated 1691, incorporates later square mullion windows. A further wing is set back to the north, likely dating to the 18th or 19th century. The interior retains some exposed chamfered beams and reset Jacobean panelling in the living room, along with a date stone inscribed with the year 1609. The initials "J W" denote James Walton, while "J E R" associated with the 1691 date refers to Johns and Elizabeth Rookes of Royds Hall.
