Description
Myrtle Grove, originally a gentleman's residence and once a Friends' Meeting House, was altered to serve as a Town Hall around 1770 for J. Atkinson Busfield. It is flanked by stable and coach-house ranges, with additional infill blocks from the late 19th or early 20th century creating a long range. The building features hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a Westmorland green-slate roof on the house, while the lower stable and coach-house ranges have stone slate roofs.
The house is two storeys tall with a symmetrical nine-bay facade, rusticated quoins, a first-floor band, and an eaves cornice. The doorway is adorned with pilasters, an entablature, and a triangular pediment. Sashed windows with raised surrounds are present throughout. The hipped roof has two stacks on each side of the hip. The stable and coach-house ranges each have a five-bay facade, with the central three bays projecting. These ranges also feature quoined angles, a first-floor band, and a pedimented gable, along with a Venetian window on the ground floor and two ridge stacks on the left block only.
