Description
The Old Market Hall is an open market hall built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a two-bay addition dated 1753. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has a stone slate roof. The building is a single storey with five bays, supported by square Doric columns on stylobates that hold up a hipped roof. At the junction with the Butter Cross, there is a walled end featuring a segmental-arched cart entry with tie-stone jambs, voussoirs with skewbacks, and a dated keystone. Inside, there is an oak king-post roof. The earliest part of the structure likely dates from shortly after 1693, when a second market charter was granted by William and Mary for a Monday market. The market hall, along with the Butter Cross and stocks, originally stood in the main street of Bingley but was moved to Prince of Wales Park in 1888. It was relocated to its current site around 1984, on land that was previously occupied by terrace houses that were demolished. Despite these moves, the Old Market Hall remains remarkably intact and well preserved.
