Description

The former library premises in Bingley, built in the mid-19th century, is designed in the Gothic Revival style. Constructed from hammer-dressed stone with polychrome ashlar dressings, it features a blocked slate roof. The building stands two storeys tall with an attic, and its street front is characterized by a prominent gable. To the left, there is a separate porch that contains a pointed-arched cusped doorway with a moulded surround and colonnettes, topped by a steeply-pitched coped gable with an ornamental crested ridge.

The library façade includes three bays of two-centred arched cusped windows, all with a continuous hoodmould. At the first floor, there are two tall two-centred arched two-light mullioned-and-transomed windows featuring geometrical tracery and a sill band. Above these windows, there are two quatrefoil panels with foliage carving and carved ribbons inscribed with the words "Public" and "Library." A clock is set in a circular panel above. The gable is steeply pitched, with kneelers and a stack at the apex that has two coupled octagonal ashlar flues.

The rear of the building has a bay with a hipped roof against the main gable, which includes a ridge stack. The right-hand return features five bays with two-centred arched cusped windows on the ground floor and two-light double-chamfered mullioned windows above. The left-hand return has three bays of similar windows. Additionally, there is a louvre at the ridge and three gabled vents on each pitch of the roof. This building is a prominent feature within the town.
