Description

The Butter Cross at the Old Market Hall is a Grade II listed structure located in Bingley. It consists of a cross and base that are set within a square open-sided structure. The cross and base are of uncertain date but are possibly from the 13th century, linked to a market charter from 1212. The surrounding structure was built around 1754 by Thomas Lister. It is made of ashlar stone with a stone slate roof. The square base features four steps and a base for a tall shaft of the cross, which extends through the apex of the roof. The square structure has square Doric corner columns on stylobates that support a pyramidal roof. The Butter Cross was re-erected on its current site around 1984.
