Description

Faweather Grange and the attached barn are a house and barn complex dating from the mid 17th century, with the barn added at right angles in the late 17th century. The house is constructed from large dressed gritstone, while the barn is made of hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins, both featuring stone slate roofs.

The house has a two-cell direct-entry plan and is two storeys high, with a single-storey outshut at the rear. It has three first-floor windows and a gabled porch on the left, which features large double tie-stone jambs with quoined angles. The inner doorway has a chamfered surround. The windows are all double-chamfered mullioned; the house has a four-light window and a two-light fire-window under one hoodmould, while the parlour has a three-light window with a hoodmould. The first floor includes three three-light windows. There is an inserted doorway, which has been altered to a window, at the junction with the barn. The left gable is coped with kneelers, and there is a single ridge stack. The rear of the house has large boulder footings and three two-light chamfered mullioned windows. To the right, steps lead down to a doorway set under a window that leads to a barrel-vaulted cellar.

Inside, the housebody features stop-chamfered spine beams, floor joists, and a bressumer, along with a later 17th-century flat-arched fireplace with a broad chamfered surround. The parlour has a single large spine beam and joists with ogee chamfer stops. A timber arcade to the outshut or aisle includes a large timbered tie-beam with mortices on the soffit for a close-studded wall. The truss is not visible. The barn has coped gables with kneelers and a columbarium in the apex. The left return features a small doorway with composite jambs, while the right return has a square-headed cart entry that is obscured by new farm buildings.
