Description
Cragg Wood Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a mid-19th century extension and alterations. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features a two-cell central lobby-entry plan, with an added 19th-century cross-wing on the left. This cross-wing has quoins that extend up to the first floor and includes a single-light window on each floor, both with stone sills and lintels that are set back.
The main house has a central doorway with monolithic jambs and a chamfered surround that rises to form a false ogee lintel. Above the doorway is a bullseye window with a raised architrave; the top spandrels are initialled "A S," while the lower spandrels display a much-weathered date that appears to read "1674." On either side of the doorway, there are large altered 19th-century windows with plain stone surrounds, with the ground-floor window on the right having two lights. The house has a central stack on the ridge. At the rear, there is an outshut that features an original window with a double-chamfered surround set into the side wall. The property is currently dilapidated and unoccupied.
