Description
Eldwick War Memorial is a First World War memorial built around 1922 by David Wildman. It features incised dates and a plaque that commemorates those lost during the Second World War, added later. The memorial is made of sandstone ashlar and has a cenotaph design.
Located at the junction of Otley Road and Saltaire Road, the memorial consists of a square shaft with carved corners and a shallow-stepped base. Each step has incised black lettering on the front that reads 'IN/ PERPETUAL/ MEMORY'. The front face of the shaft displays incised black numerals with the dates '1914/ 1918' at the top and '1939/ 1945' at the bottom. Between these dates are two bronze plaques listing the names of those from the district who were killed in the two world wars. At the top of the shaft is a cornice and a cap designed as a miniature obelisk, which features an incised cross on a carved base decorated with a relief of a laurel wreath. The entire memorial is set on a square concrete plinth.
