Description

Birch Close Farmhouse and the attached cottage are located in Bingley, with the farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century and the cottage from the late 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble brought to course, while the cottage is made of hammer-dressed stone, both featuring stone slate roofs. The building stands two storeys high.

The farmhouse has a three-cell baffle-entry plan, with a two-storey porch at the junction of the second and third cells. It features double-chamfered mullioned windows, most of which are missing their mullions. Originally, these windows were three-light, with a two-light window above; there is also a three-light window with a lowered sill and a four-light window with a three-light window above that has been altered to a single light. The porch has quoined angles, a coped gable with kneelers, and a flat-arched doorway with a chamfered surround. The inner doorway has stop-chamfered jambs but an altered lintel. The farmhouse has two stacks at the ridge.

The attached cottage, located to the right, has a higher roof and consists of a single cell with two first-floor windows. Its doorway features monolithic jambs on the right side. To the left, on both floors, there is a two-light flat-faced mullioned window with a recessed mullion in a raised plain-stone surround, retaining four-pane sashes. Above the door, there is a single four-pane sash window. The cottage also has gable stacks and a coped gable with kneelers on the right side.

Inside the farmhouse, the porch contains a stone stairway leading to the first floor and two doorways—one leading to the main house and the other to a service room. Both doorways feature large-scantling beams in the ceilings, with stop-chamfered spine beams and floor joists.
