Description

Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and adjoining buildings are stables and carriage houses that have been converted into houses, built between 1855 and 1868 by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a Welsh slate roof. The single-storey facade has seven bays, with two-storey houses at a right angle, creating an L-shape. At the rear, the carriage house encloses a setted courtyard.

Each side of the central square-headed carriage entrance has three blind bays, which are framed and separated by pilasters that support a full entablature with a bracketed cornice. Recently, a door and two windows have been added to the blind panels on the right, designed to match the original style. Each of the four houses has a four-panel door and a tall sash window on the ground floor, with eight symmetrically placed square sashes on the first floor. Two of the three chimney stacks remain, featuring bracketed cornices. The houses also have doors that open into the yard at the rear. The carriage house includes three large entrances and two oculi at a high level, although the doorways may have been altered. The roof is hipped.

This group of buildings is part of the Saltaire model village.
