Description
The memorial to Robert Ernest is located 20 meters south-east of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and dates from around 1841. This monument, built in the Gothic Revival style, features an octagonal pedestal with four blind single lancets and four traceried panels that contain inscribed lozenges. It has a moulded base and a billeted top, topped with a shallow pyramidal cap. Originally, the memorial stood on a plinth near the Church of St Philip on Infirmary Road in Sheffield. After the church was destroyed during World War II, the memorial was moved to the Sheffield Royal Infirmary around 1953 and was relocated to its current position in 1980. Robert Ernest was the first House Surgeon at the Sheffield Royal Infirmary, serving from 1798 until 1841.
