Description
Whirlow Court is a small country house, now serving as judges' lodging, built around 1870. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof with three coped stone ridge stacks. The building is designed in the Tudor Revival style.
The exterior includes a plinth, string course, eaves band, crenellated parapets, and coped gables. It is two storeys high with a five-window range and has a double depth plan. The entrance front is asymmetrical, highlighted by a central square crenellated tower with three stages and a taller octagonal crenellated turret. There is a canted crenellated stone oriel window with a stone cross casement, supported by a buttress and flanked by transomed single light windows. Above this, a double lancet window with a flat head and label mould is present.
To the right of the tower, there is a four-light cross mullioned window with a label mould, accompanied by a flat-headed single window. Below the main window, a gabled porch features flanking buttresses and a moulded doorway with a hoodmould, leading to a half-glazed double door and fanlight. On either side of the porch, there is a single window, along with additional flat-headed windows beyond. Above and to the left, a small window is located between the floors. To the left of the tower, there are three-light and two-light flat-headed windows, and below, a parapeted flat-roofed projection contains a transomed five-light cross mullioned window. A gabled cross-wing is situated further left.
The garden front showcases three two-storey bay windows, with the outer ones being canted and featuring a three-light cross mullioned window on each floor, the upper ones being smaller. The central square bay window has a pedimented parapet with a crest and a four-light cross mullioned window on each floor, with the lower one altered to form a French window. On either side, there are two-light mullioned windows, and below, to the right, a tall three-light cross mullioned window is present. The interior has not been inspected.
