Description
The Charcoal Burners Memorial in Ecclesall Wood, dated 1786, is a headstone surrounded by square wrought-iron railing. The headstone features a swept-top design and bears an inscription that reads: "In memory of George Yardley, Wood Collier. He was burnt to death in his Cabbin on this place Octr. 11th 1786. William Brookes, Salesman; David Glossop, Gamekeeper; Thos. Smith, Besom maker; Sampn. Brookshaw, Innkeeper." This memorial is notable for recording not only the occupation of George Yardley but also those of the individuals who contributed to his memorial.
