Description
The Blitz Grave, located 200 meters east of the crematorium at City Road Cemetery in Sheffield, is a mass grave of air raid victims dating from around 1941. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings. The grave is enclosed by a low wall with slab coping, backed by a hedge, creating a kidney-shaped area. At the entrance, there are a pair of square stone piers with flat caps, flanked by ramped coped walls that feature inscribed tablets. Inside, a curved path bordered by low walls with slab coping leads to an octagonal enclosure, which is surrounded by a similar wall. This enclosure has a granite band inscribed with the names of the victims. The grave holds the bodies of 134 citizens who were killed in air raids on December 12 and 15, 1940.
