Description

Nether Edge Hospital, Kingswood Building is a workhouse that now serves as the administration building for Nether Edge Hospital. It was constructed between 1842 and 1843, with later additions in the 19th century and alterations in the late 20th century. Designed by William Flockton, the building is in the Tudor Revival style and features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steeply pitched slate roofs topped with various coped stone stacks.

The building has an H-plan layout and stands two to three storeys tall, with a total of 25 windows. The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor band, moulded eaves, and coped gables. Most windows are mullion windows with pointed lights set in chamfered surrounds with flat heads. The projecting central block has a recessed entrance bay topped with a shouldered dormer that contains a clock. The upper floors feature a two-light window flanked by single windows. The entrance has a central moulded ashlar doorcase with a segment-arched opening and half-glazed double doors, flanked by single windows.

The projecting flanking wings have shouldered gables and feature two-storey canted bay windows with coped parapets, each with a four-light window on both floors. Above these are smaller four-light windows, and in the gables, there are square panels. Beyond the wings, there are flat-roofed two-storey wings with angle buttresses and coped parapets, each with two two-light windows per floor. At the rear, there are set-back wings that rise to three storeys and have a seven-window range, with three two-light windows flanked by single windows on the upper floors. Below these are roofless arcades with elliptical arches and a crenellated parapet adorned with bosses.

At each end of the building, there are projecting three-storey wings with shouldered coped gables, each featuring four-light windows on every floor. The left wing return has seven windows and a range of single-storey buildings in an L-plan at the rear. The right wing return includes a three-storey addition that matches the original style. Inside, the entrance hall boasts a moulded cornice and quatrefoil cast-iron columns. This building was originally built as the Ecclesall Union Workhouse.
