Description

The Bridge Hospital, originally the Union Workhouse, was constructed in 1839. It is a substantial red brick building with stone dressings. The entrance gateway features a semi-circular archway defined by stone voussoirs, topped by a stone pediment. The gateway is flanked by single-storey wings, each with projecting bays at the north-east and south-east ends and pilaster detailing. These wings have a window arrangement of 2 windows, 2 windows, and 1 window, with double-hung sashes containing glazing bars, set in plain reveals with semi-circular brick arches and a stone string course.

The main block stands further back from the entrance block and is three storeys high, with an octagonal central tower. The tower's alternate sides project forward under pediments, and each face has a single window range. A stone band runs between the upper storeys. The roof is slate and rises to a central cupola. Long wings extend on either side of the main block, each with a window range of 5 windows, 2 windows across, with double-hung sashes and glazing bars in plain reveals. These wings are also covered by slate roofs.
