Description
Westbrook House, now offices for the Sheffield Area Health Authority, was originally built as a house between 1794 and 1795. It has been altered in the late 19th century and the 20th century. The house is constructed of brick with ashlar stone dressings and has hipped and gabled concrete tile roofs, featuring two ridge stacks. The eaves are marked by a cornice. Originally, it had a five-window front. The windows are mostly 12-pane sashes, set within brick flat arches. The central sash window is distinguished by a stone surround and a dummy balcony with balustrade. A central doorcase has Doric columns and an entablature, now containing a 20th-century six-panel door and fanlight. There are two windows on either side of the entrance. To the left is a single-storey billiard room added in the late 19th century, with a gabled slate roof, a plinth, pilasters, a balustrade, and a shaped gable; it has three large 12-pane sashes. The right return side has three windows, with a central blank space. Below the blank space is a late 19th-century canted bay window with a balustrade and three 12-pane sashes. The rear elevation features two pedimented gables and a central Venetian stair window with a 20th-century door below. A two-story rear wing is located to the right. The interior has an entrance hall with a modillion cornice and a moulded span beam resting on Ionic piers. A cantilevered wooden dogleg staircase has twisted vase and stem balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail.
